Script Coverage

Do You Need It?
What Is Coverage?

Before sending out your script or book for production consideration, it is strongly recommended that you have it professionally read. Otherwise, you might be shooting yourself in the foot, sending out material that is just not ready. By having it professionally critiqued by some of the same people who work in the industry, you have the upper hand in a very tough industry. It's really a no-brainer. If you want to sell, having your material read by your best friend or family member just won't work. Only industry professionals will know if your material is working and why or why not. This service is primarily for experienced writers to confirm that there work meets the level of industry expectation. This service includes notes for improvement, but they are minimal (such as in professional studio coverage). If you wrote an exemplary screenplay or book that will translate well to the screen, then it is ready for submission in the entertainment industry.

There's a saying that nobody reads in Hollywood. This is somewhat accurate. The entertainment industry is deluged with reading material and there's only so much time in the day,. The majority of submitted screenplays and manuscripts is read first by "readers." Readers provide a 1200 – 1500 word report summarizing the story and includes comments about it, the writer and whatever else the reader feels is appropriate for the particular person they are reviewing for. This is known as "coverage" or a "readers' report." If the coverage gets a favorable grade, the material is then read by the reader's boss who might be an agent, producer or an executive. Readers also provide the same services directly to writers. Look at coverage as a screening process. Receiving a favorable coverage prior to submitting your work is prudent and wise investment in your business as a writer.

We can also offer consultation on books and manuscripts, adaptability of the work to a screenplay, as well as comments and suggestions about possible ways to tailor an adaptation. Coverage includes a synopsis of the script, as well as pages of comments..
